Our Story

Samuel and Alice Yarnold

Growing up with few advantages in life, Sam and Alice Yarnold both knew the meaning of hard work. At the age of 15 Alice went to work as a milliner in Rochester, NH; by 1930 she was working for a manufacturing company in Newark, NJ. The son of poor immigrant parents, as a youngster Sam also went to work to help support his family, and by age 22 was running a newsstand in Newark with his three brothers. Sam and Alice married in 1940 and for several years afterwards they cultivated blueberries and cranberries on a farm in New Jersey. Upon their retirement in 1958, they moved to New Hampshire to be closer to Alice’s family and built a modest home next door to her sister and brother-in-law in Rollinsford.

Following various illnesses, Sam and Alice came to appreciate the skills of the caring staff at local hospitals and having no children, they left the bulk of their estate to a trust fund to support those pursuing a career in the medical fields. Alice passed away in 1991 and Sam in 1994; as a result of their hard work, simple lifestyle, and sound financial investments, they were able to bequeath over $800,000 to fund scholarships to assist those whose financial circumstances may make pursuing further education difficult.
